What Are the Signs of Separation Anxiety in Dogs?
Separation anxiety in dogs is a common behavioral issue characterized by stress and fear when they are left alone. A key sign is excessive barking, howling, or whining that begins when the owner departs and often continues until they return. Destructive behaviors, such as chewing furniture, scratching doors, or tearing items near exits, are also typical and stem from the dog’s attempts to cope with their anxiety or escape.

House soiling, including urinating or defecating indoors, can occur even in house-trained dogs and is often a response to stress rather than poor training. Physical signs like pacing, excessive drooling, panting, or trembling are also common, along with a heightened attachment to the owner. Dogs may follow their owner constantly and show distress when noticing pre-departure cues, such as picking up keys.
It's important to distinguish separation anxiety from other issues like boredom or medical conditions. Consulting a veterinarian or behaviorist can help confirm the diagnosis. Addressing the issue may involve behavioral training, creating a calming environment, or, in severe cases, medication prescribed by a vet. Early intervention and patience can significantly improve a dog's well-being.
