Why Does My Dog Jump on People?

Jumping up is a common behavior in dogs, often their way of greeting people. They may be feeling excited, seeking your attention, or simply trying to get closer to your face. However, while this behavior might seem friendly to your dog, it can be annoying or even intimidating to others.

Dogs jump for various reasons. It's a natural way for them to express their excitement and enthusiasm when greeting someone. Some dogs learn that jumping up gets them attention, even if it's negative attention, so they continue the behavior. And sometimes, dogs simply haven't been taught that jumping is not an acceptable greeting.

To prevent your dog from jumping up, it's important to be proactive. When your dog jumps, ignore the behavior by turning your back and avoiding eye contact. This shows them that jumping doesn't get them the positive attention they seek. Instead, reward calm behavior. Praise and reward your dog when they greet people with all four paws on the ground. You can also teach alternative behaviors, like sitting or offering a paw, as a more appropriate way to greet someone.

Consistency is key, so ensure everyone in the household follows the same approach. Finally, using a leash can help you manage your dog's greeting behavior, especially in situations where you anticipate they might get excited.
