What Are the Signs of a Sick Puppy?

Bringing a new puppy home is an exciting and heartwarming experience. Their playful energy, waggly tails, and affectionate cuddles make them a cherished part of the family. However, just like babies, puppies are delicate and require us to pay close attention to their health. Since they can’t tell us directly that they’re not feeling well, we must recognize the signs of illness early. Catching health issues quickly can mean the difference between a minor setback and a debilitating condition or emergency situation.

Here are some common signs that your puppy may be feeling under the weather:

None of that famous puppy energy

A happy puppy is typically full of energy, bouncing around with curiosity. If your normally playful pup suddenly seems uninterested in activities, sleeps excessively, or is generally lethargic, it may be a sign that something is wrong. Lethargy, for example, can indicate infections, digestive issues, or even more serious conditions that need immediate attention.

Disinterest in food

Puppies have healthy appetites and should be eager to eat at mealtimes. They are snacking machines! If your puppy refuses food, eats significantly less than usual, or struggles to chew and swallow, it could signal digestive problems, infections, or dental pain. Skipping one meal may not be a concern, but persistent loss of appetite requires a vet visit.

Pup can’t keep food down

Occasional mild tummy troubles can occur, but frequent vomiting or diarrhea is a red flag. It may be caused by eating something the dog shouldn’t have, infections, parasites, or serious illnesses like parvovirus. See veterinary care immediately if you notice blood in the dog's stool or vomit.

Lots of sneezing and coughing

Just like humans, puppies can catch respiratory infections. Persistent coughing, wheezing, nasal discharge, or labored breathing can indicate kennel cough, pneumonia, or allergies. If your puppy struggles to breathe or has blue or pale gums, immediately seek emergency care.

Pup has runny eyes or lots of boogies

While a little eye discharge can be normal, excessive tearing, yellow or green mucus, or crusty eyes may suggest an infection. Likewise, a constantly runny or crusty nose might mean a cold or something more serious like distemper.

Running a fever

A dog’s normal body temperature ranges from 101°F to 102.5°F. If your puppy’s nose is unusually warm and dry, they seem extra tired, or you notice shivering, they might have a fever. You can check their temperature with a pet thermometer, and if it’s above 103°F, call your vet.

There are changes to their skin or coat

A puppy’s coat should be shiny and soft. If you notice excessive shedding, bald spots, constant scratching, redness, or sores, it could be due to allergies, parasites like fleas, or skin infections. Dry or flaky skin can also indicate underlying health problems or poor nutrition.

Lots of peeing and/or lots of drinking

Frequent urination, straining, blood in the urine, or accidents in a previously house-trained puppy can signal urinary tract infections or kidney issues. On the other hand, drinking an excessive amount of water could indicate diabetes or other medical concerns.

Acting like a totally different puppy

If your puppy suddenly becomes aggressive, overly clingy, or hides more than usual, they may be experiencing pain or discomfort. Whimpering or excessive vocalization can also indicate distress. Trust your instincts—if your puppy is acting strangely, something might be wrong.

Not so normal swollen belly

A swollen belly, especially if it’s firm or accompanied by discomfort, could be a sign of worms, gas buildup, or even a life-threatening condition called bloat. If your puppy seems restless, paces, or tries to vomit without success, seek emergency help.

When to Call the Vet

If your puppy displays any of these signs, it’s best to consult your veterinarian. Puppies have weaker immune systems than adult dogs, so they can deteriorate quickly if an illness is left untreated. Signs that require immediate veterinary care include:

  • Persistent vomiting or diarrhea
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Seizures or collapse
  • Inability to walk or stand
  • Unresponsiveness

By staying observant and proactive, you can ensure your puppy grows into a healthy, energetic best pal for many years to come. If you ever feel unsure about their well-being, trust your gut—your vet is always there to help!
