Why Does My Dog Chew on Shoes?

Shoe chewing is a common canine behavior that can be both frustrating and expensive for dog owners. While it might seem like your dog is deliberately trying to ruin your favorite footwear, there are a variety of reasons why they engage in this behavior.

Teething and Exploration: Puppies often chew on objects to relieve the discomfort of teething. Shoes, with their varied textures and smells, can be particularly appealing. Additionally, dogs explore their world through their mouths, and chewing on shoes can be a way for them to learn about their environment.

Boredom and Anxiety: Dogs that are bored or anxious may chew on shoes as a way to release pent-up energy or cope with stress. This behavior is often seen in dogs that are left alone for long periods or do not get enough exercise and mental stimulation.

Attention-Seeking: If a dog receives attention, even if it's negative attention like scolding, when chewing on shoes, they may continue the behavior to elicit a reaction from their owner.

Scent and Taste: Shoes can carry a variety of interesting scents, including the owner's scent, which can be appealing to dogs. Some dogs may also enjoy the taste or texture of certain shoe materials.

Separation Anxiety: Dogs with separation anxiety may chew on shoes as a way to cope with the stress of being separated from their owners. This behavior is often accompanied by other signs of anxiety, such as barking, howling, or pacing.

How to Prevent Shoe Chewing:

• Provide Appropriate Chew Toys: Offer a variety of safe and durable chew toys to satisfy your dog's chewing instincts.
• Exercise and Mental Stimulation: Ensure your dog gets enough physical activity and mental enrichment to prevent boredom and anxiety.
• Training and Positive Reinforcement: Teach your dog basic obedience commands like "leave it" and "drop it" to discourage shoe chewing.
• Supervision and Management: Keep shoes out of your dog's reach, especially when they are unsupervised.
• Deterrent Sprays: Consider using bitter-tasting sprays on shoes to make them less appealing.
